combed waves in black lacquer and various
seashells in painted ceramic inlays, and gold-
lacquer waterweeds, the interiors fundame
with silver liners and each applied with silver
tablets for inscriptions, signed on a pottery

An inlaid wood suzuribako (writing box)
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
Rectangular, with a removable writing box
with inkstone and circular ceramic water
dropper decorated with a futatsudomoe
(double whorl), all set into the upper
compartment, the deeper compartment
below fitted with two drawers, decorated
overall in inlays of gold and black lacquer,
tsuishu (carved red lacquer), glazed ceramic,
mother-of-pearl and silver, with a wine
pot and an ink cake on the top surface
and on the sides with a butterfly above
chrysanthemums, and a circular mirror with
a landscape and pine trees, the drawers
decorated with seashells and seaweed,
the brass hardware decorated with enamel
inlays, the interiors roiro-nuri sealed Kan
