This pale boxwood netsuke mask quite unusual featuring Masks, Peter E. Müller, no. 176.
depicts Oto, a mask used for female ittobori (single cut) incision
characters in Kyogen, a form of work. Himotoshi on the
traditional Japanese comic theatre. central bridge on the Carved and lacquered in black and gold as
She is depicted with plump cheeks reverse. the mask of an expressive and very octopus-
and smiling, the hair lacquered in like Usofuki with comically funnel-shaped
black. Himotoshi on the central HEIGHT 6 cm pressed forward lips. Himotoshi through the
bridge on the reverse and signature central bridge on the reverse.
