A MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID BROWN
LACQUER RECTANGULAR TRAY
17TH CENTURY
The narrow tray has indented corners and is
inlaid in the center with a scene of fgures in
a lake retreat, and with a poetic inscription,
all below diaper patterns on the slightly
rounded, fared sides which are inlaid on the
exterior with fower scroll.

The inscription was taken from Tang dynasty
poet Du Fu’s poem and can be translated as:
Two yellow nightingales singing in the green
willow tree, a string of white herons soaring into
the blue sky.
