Worked in varying depths of relief, the artisan has skillfully
incorporated the natural Þ ssures and characteristics of the stone
to enhance the jagged, craggy appearance of the mountains. The
present boulder is also an excellent example of vibrant green
jade, with its bright apple-green and rich emerald tones. For
a related carving of similar stone, see one illustrated in Roger
Keverne, ed., Jade, London, 1995, Þ g. 120. See also two large
spinach-green boulders: the Þ rst exhibited in Virtuous Treasures:
Chinese Jades for the Scholar’s Table, The University of Hong
Kong, 2007-2008, cat. no. 34, the second sold in these rooms,
27th February 1981, lot 400.
