NOTE
This painting is an extremely rare example of Zhao Shao’ang’s early
subject and style after he entered the painting school founded by
Gao Qifeng, the master of Lingnan Style of paintings, in 1921. As
Gao advocates painting nature as a way of elevating one’s spirit and
cultivating noble characters, Zhao captures the mythical quality of
the deer with delicate fine-brushwork. His further inscription on
the right side of the painting after nearly 40 years shows the change
of style of his calligraphy. The original inscription on the left was
clearly influenced by Gao’s style. In such sense, the painting is an
important exemplification of Zhao’s artistic evolution.
