The wooden cross inlaid with incised mother-of-
pearl to create designs of blooming lotus, grape
vines with curling tendrils, small flowers and leafy
sprays, all encompassed within an elegant single
line border, Japanese inscription on the reverse.

in Western heraldic and religious art, the three upper
terminals were thought to represent the Trinity.

A MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID LACQUER CUP
Qianli mark, Qing Dynasty
With deep rounded sides raising from a short,
straight foot to a flared rim, finely decorated with
two cartouches each depicting a scholar and an
attendant gazing at a riverscape, reserved on a
diaper trellis, all inlaid with mother-of-pearl, silver
and gold foils on a deep-brown lacquer ground.
