Liu Jiyou, a native of Tianjin, is famous for his work as a popular illustrator, especially in the
area of lianhuanhua, a Chinese genre of fully-illustrated, didactic, mass-market comic book,
often used for government propaganda during the Mao era. Liu’s depictions of the Monkey
King, the present lot being a fine example, are particularly well known. He enjoyed significant
official support, receiving praise from both Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai.
