Feng-hwa Mah (Ma Fenghua 馬逢華, 1922-2013) was a scholar of 8224
economics as well as a modern literatus and poet. Born in the city of TAI JINGNONG (1903-1990)
Kaifeng in Henan province, Mah studied economics at National Peking Calligraphy
University and the University of Michigan. From 1961 to 1987, he Ink on paper, mounted for framing, dedicated to Fenghua xiansheng
taught economics at the University of Washington, Seattle, retiring in and Dingjian furen, signed Tai Jingnong with two artist’s seals reading
1987 with the title of Professor Emeritus. Mah authored many articles Longpo and Jingnong wu yang.
on the Chinese economy and published two books on China’s foreign 11 x 27 1/4in (28 x 69.2cm)
trade in 1963 and 1971. Mah also published two collections of literary $5,500 - 7,000
essays in 1993 and 2007, as well as a memoir in 2011 detailing his
early days of study in Beijing and his later life as an émigré scholar. He 臺静 農 行書書法 水墨紙本 横幅
hosted many of his fellow literati such as Shen Congwen (1902-1988)
and Liang Shiqiu (1903-1987) during their visits to the United States.
Such meetings were the impetus for the creation of the majority of
the calligraphy works and paintings in Mah’s collection that are being
offered in this auction.
