A LARGE SILVERED BRONZE MIRROR
Tang Dynasty
The eight-lobed mirror finely cast with two waterfowl
each with a shou sash tied around its neck and one
foot grasping the stem of a lotus which trails in an
elegant arabesque to join a single lotus pad which
supports a long-tailed bird holding a branch of
grapes in its bill, the central knob set under a single
lotus blossom with radiating leaves, all enclosed by
an outer band of alternating birds, clouds, and lotus
sprays within a raised rim.

closely related design, unearthed in 1956 at
Jiangchengbao, Baoji, Shaanxi province, now in the
collection of Shaanxi History Museum, illustrated in
Compendium of Chinese Bronzes, Vol. 16, Mirror,
337 Dongguan, 1998, p.146, no.143.

A SILVERED-BRONZE 'LION AND GRAPEVINE'
MIRROR
Tang Dynasty
Cast in high relief on the back with a 'crouching
beast'-form loop surrounded by five lions cavorting
among ripe grape vines enclosed by a beaded
border within the outer band of birds in flight among
further grapevines below discrete cloud scrolls at
the rim.

collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, illustrated
by Ju-hsi Chou, Circles of Reflection: The Carter
Collection of Chinese Bronze Mirrors, Cleveland,
2000, p.66, no.56, described as late 7th century
based on an example found in the tomb of Anpu
and his wife (d. 664 and 704 respectively) in
338 Luoyang, Henan province.
