bands painted with clouds in turquoise, yellow and lavender with picked out in yellow and aubergine against the leaf green glaze
black outlines against the dark blue enamel ground, the replacement covering the compressed ovoid body, five leaf-shaped loops on the
top of similar blue enamel (altered, repaired crack). shoulder and the short finished with a rolled rim, the foot pad and
13 1/2in (34.5cm) high base left unglazed (old chips, small areas of retouching).

A SU-SANCAI GLAZED CERAMIC FIGURE OF GUANYU The jars form part of a small group of surviving jars named after the
Ming dynasty botanist Sir John Tradescant (d. 1629), who acquired one such jar,

TWO SANCAI GLAZED POTTERY STORAGE JARS AND AN
ASSOCIATED LID
Ming dynasty, 16th/17th century
Each showing yellow and aubergine enamels on a leaf green ground:
the first jar impressed with a large peony flower and leaf scroll design
below a cloud collar lappet band on the shoulder that appears on
the associated lid with lotus bud finial (both extensively repaired and
retouched); the second jar applied in high relief with opposing pairs
of playful fu-lions chasing ribbon-tied fabric balls amid incised cloud
scrolls below a band of cloud collar lappets on the shoulder (old
chips, degraded glaze). [3]
