At the decisive Battle of Minatogawa in early July 1336, Ashikaga
Takauji (1305-1358) defeated the imperial forces championed by
Nitta Yoshisada (1301-1338) and Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336),
allowing him to seize Kyoto against the wishes of Emperor Go-Daigo
who sought to lessen the power of the warrior class and return to the
social and political systems of the Heian period.
