An official’s semi-formal winter hat and
peacock feather
19th century
The hat (jiguan) with a sea otter fur trim around
the upturned outer brim, the high crown in
black satin with twisted red silk tassels and a
gilt metal and opaque blue glass finial; together
with a single-eyed peacock feather plume lingzi,
to be worn on the hat.
9in (22cm) diameter, the hat
$2,000 - 3,000

As with most aspects of official Qing court
dress, the hat afforded the wearer to announce
his rank and position. Here the opaque blue
glass finial would have denoted an official of the
fourth rank, whereas the wearing of single-eyed
feather plume was a special honor conferred by
the emperor upon nobles and officials.
