This exquisitely painted scene, depicting a dragon floating in a shroud of 無名氏 高士山水 設色絹本 立軸 十七/十八世紀作
billowing clouds, shows the influence of a long line of dragon painters.
The cottony cloud forms, the almost whimsical expression on the dragon’s
face, and the vivid plasticity of the beast’s form, trumpet the influence
of the Southern Song dragon painter Chen Rong (陳容 ca. 1200–1266).
The artist displays a masterful use of ink and a close study of nature in
rendering the antler-like textures of the claws and horns, the leathery
scales and the wispy hairs of the creature’s beard, all modulated by the
mists swirling in the foreground.
