Wang Geyi, who is also known as Wang Xian, was a prominent 員繼承
figure in the 20th century Chinese art world. Originally a student
of Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), Wang Geyi traveled to Japan in
1921 with Wang Zhen (1867-1938) and in 1927 with Zhang Daqian
(1899-1983). He would teach in Shanghai and Chongqing. In 1936,
when this painting was created, he was a professor at the Shanghai
College of Art. Also known for his seal carving abilities, Wang Geyi
was vice-president of the Xiling Yinshe.
