A Nepalese gilt copper alloy figure of Padampa Sanggye. He is squating with a garment
around his lower part of the body, with naked chest, hands raised in front of him in the
double-handed vitarka mudra, thumb and index finger hold a round object (diamonds?),
he has wide open piercing eyes, a distinct urna and beard, the hair in thick dreadlocks,
bracelets around his wrists, the garment and belt flows over the square double lotus base
with its back left bare and covered with red lacquer. Sealed bottom plate engraved with a
lotus flower. C. 14th century. Weight 212 g. H. 7 cm.
The identification of Padampa Sanggye of the Pacification type is based on at least seven figures
with very like iconography as seen in Himalayan Art Ressource (Indian Adept: Padampa Sanggye
(Pacification). See also Bonhams sale New York, 19 Mar 2018, lot 3010.

Padampa Sanggye was a great Buddhist yogi from the second half of 11th century. He taught the
tantric practice Chö, trained female students e.g. the female saint Machig Ladrön, and was re-
nowned for his non-verbal teachings. The present figure shows him practising Tummo - releasing
the inner fire (The Sacred Art of Tibet, London 1996, p. 150).

The figure, small in size, would have been for personal practice.
