A fine gilt-bronze and cloisonné enamel ‘bajixiang’
incense burner and cover
Jiaqing
The rounded slightly waisted body enamelled with four musical stones
each suspending one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems, variously the
double fish, the lotus, the endless knot and the vase, each alternating
with pairs of blossoming Indian lotus flowers and all amidst foliate
scrolls, the underside with single blossoms each contained within
a hexagonal geometric ground, all raised on three elaborately
caparisoned elephant heads set with turquoise and coral beads, the
two handles each formed as a joyfully trumpeting elephant head with
raised trunk, the cover with four lappets each containing a lotus bloom,
between pairs of bats flanking a shou character amid cloud scrolls,
the finial formed as a slumbering recumbent elephant balancing a two-
handled vase and cover on its saddlecloth.
