A RARE JADE PHOENIX
HAN DYNASTY (206 BC-AD 220)
The jade is finely carved in the round as a phoenix with legs tucked
under its plump body, the head with rounded eyes, a slightly
hooked beak and a crested crown. The plummage is highlighted
by the carved scrolling lines, detailed with wings that turn to its
body, all terminating with spreading tail feathers.

Compare with two jade birds carved with a similar naturalistic style, one
is dated to the Western Han dynasty and in the collection of Xianyang
Museum in Shaanxi province, illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji-
yuqi, vol. 9, Beijing, 1986, p. 90, no. 168; the other dated to the late
Western Han dynasty in the Aurora Art Museum Collection, illustrated
in Jades of Han Dynasty, Taipei, 2005, no. 132.

的玉鳳相比較,其刊載於《中國美術全集 ·工藝美術編·玉器》,第 9 冊,
北京,1986 年,頁 90,圖版 168 號。此外,還可比較一件斷代西漢晚
期的玉鳥,現藏於震旦博物館,見蔡慶良,《漢代玉器》,台北, 2005年,
圖版 132 號。
