A SQUARE MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID LACQUER WRITING
BOX AND COVER
Late Ming/Early Qing Dynasty
The square box fully lined with black lacquer, decorated on the
cover with the ‘Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove’ accompanied
by attendants and engaging in various literati pursuit, the sides with
panels depicting birds perching on blossoming and fruiting branches,
the underside with a poem reading ‘Morning sun, clear and bright,
shines on the emerald moss. Last night in the courtyard, a flowering
peach bloomed. As soon as the screen opens, a fragrance wafts on
the gentle breeze. From this can be known an immortal had come,
riding on his crane’, the sides of the box with further sages in garden
scenes, the removable inner trays fitted with an inkstone and metal
water dropper set into a circular saucer, with mother of pearl inlay.
