A RARE IMPERIAL CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL
‘DOUBLE LOZENGE’ VASE
Qianlong
Rising from a square, splayed foot, the flat, lozenge
shaped body finely decorated with C scrolls
enclosing keyfret bands, surrounded by archaistic
scrolls, the sides and tall neck enamelled with
elaborate lotus blossoms and tendrils in various
colours of red, green, blue, yellow, white and pink on
emerald green and deep turquoise grounds.

清乾隆 銅胎掐絲琺瑯雲雷紋方勝式小瓶

Included as part of the Eight Treasures 八寶,
the double lozenge form may have derived from
hanging accessories in the ancient past as part
of the traditional attire. Double lozenge, or 方勝
Fangsheng, resemble the character 勝 Sheng, as
a pun for victory, is conceived as a blessing for
archeiving success.

Compare with a similar cloisonné enamel vase, mid-
Qing dynasty, in the collection of Palace Museum,
Beijing, of similar double lozenge shape composed
of key-fret borders, illustrated in Compendium of
Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 4,
Cloisonné in the Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, p.164,
pl.115.
