ROBE, JIFU
Late Qing Dynasty
Finely worked in satin stitch and dense couched
gold threads with nine writhing five-clawed dragons
amidst clusters of vaporous clouds interspersed
with the Eight Daoist Emblems, shou characters and
bats, all above the terrestrial diagram with the Eight
Buddhist Symbols amidst the crashing waves and
lishui stripe at the hem picked out in shades of blue,
grey, yellow and bright purple, with matching black-
ground collar and cuffs.

Late Qing Dynasty
Worked in couched gold threads and counted stitch
with nine five-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls
amid satin stitch designs of vaporous ruyi clouds
interspersed with bats, cranes and a centre basket
of peaches, rendered in knotted stitch, above a hem
of cresting waves and lishui stripe.
