Torii Tadakiyo (1875–1941) and Torii Kiyosada
(1844–1901)
Five ôban from the series Kabuki jûhachiban,
containing portraits of Ichikawa Danjûrô IX in
different roles. Block carver: Watanabe Yatarô.
Printer: Surikô Ôkame. Publisher: Hasegawa
Sumi. Dates: Meiji 28, 29 (1895, 1896). Based on
drawings by his father, Torii Kiyosada. Present
are: a) Table of contents (twice); b) Danjûrô as
Kamakura Gongorô Kagemasa (Shibaraku), with
an actor of the past as prince (Shinnô). Signed:
Tadakiyo ga and seal Tadakiyo; Torii Kiyosada
ga and seal Kiyosada; c) Danjûrô as Aotake Gorô
(Oshimodoshi); Danjûrô as the Ghost of Kage-
kiyo (Gedatsu). Each signed: Tadakiyo ga and
seal Tadakiyo. (5) Very good impressions, blind
printing, somewhat yellowed, some creasing at
margins, all with traces of usage, a) worm dam-
