A HUANGHUALI WAISTED SQUARE CORNER-LEG TABLE
          18TH CENTURY
The paneled-top is set within the square frame above a narrow waist and
shaped aprons carved with chilong and scrollwork. The beaded, square-form
legs terminate in hoof feet and are joined by humpback stretchers.
34¿ in. (86.7 cm.) high, 37º in. (94.6 cm.) square
          $60,000-80,000

For dining, writing, appreciating antiques, or playing games, the square
table is one of the most versatile forms in Chinese furniture. The humpback
stretchers provide added strength while lightening the overall appearance,
and not interfering with the knees of the sitters. A huanghuali square-form
table carved at each corner in imitation of a metal mount, formerly in the
Marie Theresa L. Virata Collection, was sold at Christie’s New York, 16 March
          2017, lot 621.
