                                                                            A PAINTED ENAMEL DOUBLE-GOURD-
                                                                            SHAPED ‘ABSTINENCE’ PLAQUE
                                                                            18TH-19TH CENTURY
                                                                            One side of the plaque is inscribed in black with two
                                                                            characters, zhai jie (abstinence) in standard script,
                                                                            and the reverse is inscribed in Manchu with the same
                                                                            phrase. Both inscriptions are surrounded by foral scroll
                                                                            and leafy tendrils and are reserved on a dotted lavender
                                                                            ground framed by a metal border.
