MID-18TH CENTURY
Enameled with a depiction of Peter the Great directing
an attendant with barrels at a riverside landscape, within a
bianco-sopra-bianco foliate border

The crowned fgure in this scene has traditionally been
identifed as Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia, who
arrived in Amsterdam in 1697 and worked incognito at
the small Dutch port of Zaandam. Various scenes with
this crowned fgure working on riverside wharves are
recorded.
