AN EQUESTRIAN PORTRAIT OF A PRINCESS
North India, possibly Murshidabad, late 18th/early 19th century
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper; treasuring the flower in her hand, the luxuriously-clad
princess travels on her spirited stallion attended by handmaidens before a brilliant gold ground.
9 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. (24.2 x 18.4 cm)
$7,000 - 10,000
The solid golden field with shaded green banks, lake, and stylized purple mountains are
features more commonly associated with Murshidabad (see Falk & Archer, Indian Miniatures,
London, 1981, pp. 477-9, nos. 370xv-xvi). However the female faces are more Kishangarh.
