A CARVED AND INCISED YUE CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
FIVE DYNASTIES, 10TH CENTURY
The domed cover is carved in low relief in the center with a chrysanthemum blossom surrounded
by incised feathery leaves within a raised border and an outer hatchured band, and is covered with
a glaze of greyish-olive color that also covers the slightly tapering sides of the box as well as the
spreading foot where the glaze continues over the foot onto the base. The interiors are similarly glazed.

The Yue kilns in Zhejiang province fourished in the 10th century and produced the frst oficial
Chinese ceramic ware, commissioned by the local Wu-Yue court. Spherical boxes decorated with
fruit or foral motifs, such as the present example, were among the popular products of the kilns.
