of rectangular section, the wide flaring sides rising from a
slightly tapered foot, delicately carved through layers of
cinnabar lacquer, depicting on the interior a pair of phoenix in
flight, each bird with outstretched wings finely detailed with
plumage and a long billowing tail, amongst lush peony blooms
borne on curved leafy stems, the exterior similarly decorated
with a foliate scroll, the base lacquered in brown
35.3 cm, 13⅞ in.
