Yellow, which is a colour associated with the earth in traditional
Chinese thought, has often been reserved for the use of the
emperor in ceramics and textiles. Porcelains such as the
current pair of bowls, completed covered inside and out with
yellow enamel have always been treasured, as under Qing
regulations, only the emperor, empress or dowager empress
were able to use them. Yellow-glazed porcelains in the
Qing dynasty were also utilised for rituals conducted by the
Emperor at the Diqitan, the Altar of Earth.
It is rare to find such a well-matched pair of yellow-glazed
bowls with Kangxi reign marks, and especially a pair preserved
in such good condition. An individual Kangxi reign-marked
yellow-glazed bowl of this form from the collection of Samuel
Putnam Avery Sr., New York, was purchased by subscription in
1879 and is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, acc. no. 79.2.961. Another pair of Kangxi reign-marked
yellow-glazed bowls of this size and form from the T.Y. Chao
collection was sold in these rooms, 18th November 1986, lot
 97. See also an individual Kangxi yellow-glazed bowl more
recently sold in these rooms, 8th October 2013, lot 3146.
