A ‘CHAYANG’ BROWN-GLAZED BOWL,
SOUTHERN SONG / YUAN DYNASTY
together with a lacquer stand, Japanese wood box (4)
Diameter 4¾ in., 12.1 cm
Located in Nanping, Fujian province, Chayang kiln is famous
for its Jian-style dark-glazed tea bowls. Compare a related
bowl from this kiln, attributed to 13th to 14th century, gifted
by William Cleverly Alexander to Charles Lang Freer in 1902,
now in the collection of the National Museum of Asian Art,
Washington, D.C. (accession no. F1902.187), published on
the Museum’s website.
