The combination of lotus and mandarin ducks symbolizes
101 marital harmony and the design often appears on pieces
presented to newlywed couples. A pair of bowls of this design is
illustrated in Geng Baochang, Ming Qing ciqi jianding [Appraisal
of Ming and Qing Porcelain], Hong Kong, 1993, pl. 516.
Compare also two similar bowls of Daoguang mark and period
sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 31st October 1995, lot 516;
28th April 1998, lot 821; and 5th April 2017, lot 3704.
