Collection of Tage Holm Fredrik Grönwall (1903-1988),
acquired in Japan between the 1950s and early 1960s.
For related Ming dynasty incense burners, see one in the
form of a duck with its head turned to one side, formerly in
the collection of Brenda Zara Seligman, now in the British
Museum, London, and illustrated in Jessica Harrison-Hall,
Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, pl.
16:93; another, in the form of a parrot, gifted to the Museum
by George Eumorfopoulos, illustrated in ibid., pl. 1694.
Tage Holm Fredrik Grönwall was a Swedish diplomat who
had a long career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was
stationed in Tokyo from 1956 to 1962.
