                          such as appear also on the Ordos bronzes; diapered, with geomet-
                          rical motifs repeated over the whole surface; and composed of
                          those endless rhythmic cloud volutes which we have already en-
                          countered on the inlaid bronzes, set about with horsemen, deer, ti-
                          gers, and more fabulous creatures. The silk panel from Noin-Ula
                          illustrated here is a kind of Taoist landscape composed of giant
                          spirit-fungi (ling-chih) alternating with rocky crags topped by-
                          phoenixes and adorned with formalised trees, executed in a mixed
                          Chinese-Western style which suggests that Chinese weavers were
