A BLUE AND WHITE ‘RED CLIFF’ BOWL
AND THREE DISHES
17th/18th century
The bowl painted to the exterior with a panel
enclosing a scene with the poet Su Shi and 202
companions in a boat, all enclosed by a
larger continuous calligraphy panel with an
excerpt from Su Shi’s Ode to the Red Cliff,
the interior with a four-character Yongle
reign mark; the dishes each decorated
with a central medallion depicting Shoulao
riding a crane, surrounded by four panels
each depicting two of the Eight Immortals,
separated by stylised shou characters, the
exterior with a further shou character band.
