A BRILLIANT BLUE AND WHITE ‘LOTUS’ MALLET VASE
Xuande mark, Kangxi
Painted in a deep violet-blue cobalt with scrolling stylized lotus and
composite flowerheads and leafy tendrils that wrap around the
body and continue over the rounded shoulders and halfway up the
cylindrical neck to a single molded bow-string band below upright
plantain-leaf lappets and a plain, slightly flaring rim, an encircled
Xuande six-character mark to the base.

This elegant mallet shape is a fairly rare form in the Chinese potter’s
oeuvre. Another Kangxi-period mallet-form blue and white vase in
the Palace Museum, Beijing, painted with two stylized phoenixes
rather than the composite flowerheads of this example, is illustrated in
Qingdai yuyao ciqi, vol. I, part II, Beijing, 2005, pp. 102-3, no. 40.
