A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF A YAKSHA GENERAL
TIBET, 15TH/16TH CENTURY The Sporer Collection, New Jersey, acquired from Doris Wiener
Gallery, New York, 8 April 1970
The pot-bellied fgure, seated in lalitasana on a single lotus bases atop
an ornate cushion, his right hand holding coral while his left rests PUBLISHED:
on a mongoose, wearing a thick silk dhoti and scarf, his face with
protruding eyes, smiling lips and goatee, his earlobes elongated with Himalayan Art Resource (himalayanart.org), item no. 24024
earrings, with a jeweled crown set in front of his chignon, heavily gilt
overall, base sealed, and with an inscription on the verso One of the twelve Yaksha Generals from the mandala of Medicine Buddha,
5¬ in. (14.2 cm.) high this sculpture is part of a ffty-one piece set of sculptures. Compare with
another example possibly from the same set (U. von Schroeder, Indo-
$60,000-80,000 Tibetan Bronzes, 1981, p.454, fg.125B), and four others from this set,
which sold at Christie’s Paris on 8 June 2010, lot 378.
