A ‘CIZHOU’-TYPE PAINTED JAR
SONG DYNASTY
the globular body set over a low foot and rising
to a short upright mouthrim, covered overall in
an ivory glaze stopping neatly above the foot
and painted in bold black strokes with a foliate
scroll wrapping around the shoulder and sides,
the unglazed foot a pale buff tone

GLAZED ‘CIZHOU’ JAR
YUAN DYNASTY
the sturdily potted body of ovoid form, the
rounded shoulders tapering to a wide rolled-
lipped rim, covered overall with a rich burnt-
umber brown glaze deftly carved through to
the buff ground with two bands of luxuriantly
scrolling leafy foliage reserved between line
borders, the neck and base unglazed
