A FAMILLE ROSE TWO-HANDLED ‘AMPHORA’ VASE
Qianlong period, circa 1750
Of unusual ‘amphora’ form, with oviform body, tall trumpet neck
and spreading foot, painted in various registers with composite floral
groupings of primarily hibiscus and with smaller flowerheads of peony
and prunus, set between single gilt bow-string bands at the neck
and lower body and simple pale turquoise cell bands, the sides of the
vessel with harp-shaped vertical handles.

This unusual vase combines European and Chinese forms. The
handles are clearly of European design, but the main vase is similar to
types found in early Chinese bronzes, and western classical urns.
