A RARE PAIR OF BLUE-ENAMELED EUROPEAN-SHAPED The Neo-classical style was made popular in Britain by the classically
PISTOL-HANDLED URNS AND RETICULATED COVERS trained interior decorator/architect Robert Adam, himself inspired
Late Qianlong/Jiaqing period, circa 1780-1810 by the excavations at Pompeii between 1750- 1760. The distinctive
Modeled in a purely European Neo-classical style and enameled shape of these pistol-handled urns is actually derived originally from
mostly in blue, iron-red, sepia and gilt, the relief molded sides with Roman and Etruscan classical funerary urns, a forgotten style revived
an oval upright cartouche depicting a sepia riverscape and European in the late 16th century during the Italian Renaissance. The Chinese
building above a long blue and gilt laurel swag suspended from the export versions are found in a range of shapes, with handles and
two-upright pistol-grip handles, the very unusual, pierced bell-flower finials of various forms. The bases are mostly square (as the funerary
decoration on both domed reticulated covers echoing the enameled originals would probably have been) and were usually colored to
patterns on the swag-molded urns. resemble marble or porphyry. The deep body shape is most unusual,
15 1/2in (39cm) high (2). as are the domed reticulated covers which are not usually found on
pistol-handled urns. The specific origin of these Chinese porcelain
$6,000 - 8,000 versions is attributed variously to the Marieburg factory in Sweden, or
                                                             to Scandinavian silver forms.
