A BLUE-GROUND EMBROIDERED SILK LADY’S ‘DRAGON’ Compare with a related blue-ground ‘dragon’ robe, 19th century,
ROBE, JIFU which was sold at Bonhams London, 13 May 2021, lot 94.
Late 19th century
Worked in fine satin stitch in shades of blue, green, red and pale violet
and couched gold threads with nine five-clawed dragons pursuing
flaming pearls amidst clusters of vaporous clouds interspersed with
bats, the Daoist Emblems and flying cranes, all reserved on a rich blue
ground above the terrestrial diagram with lishui stripe at the hem, the
dark-blue-ground cuffs, collar and sleeve bands decorated with further
striding dragons and clouds.
