in the form of a trunk section of a gnarled tree, the bark
detailed with knots, wrapped around the sides with branches
laden with clusters of magnolia blooms and buds, the interior
lined with silver-coloured metal

A CARNELIAN AGATE CARVING OF A QILIN
QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
depicted recumbent, the vermillion-red sections of the stone
skilfully carved as its slightly turned head, with a lingzhi
stem in its mouth, detailed with a snout flanked by curling
whiskers below a pair of bulging eyes and a prominent horn,
a smaller mythical beast clambering and a curled upswept
tail at the rear, the milky-white part of the stone forming its
muscular body and a pronounced spine, wood stand
