Cabbage, (cai, 菜) is a homophone with the word for wealth 財. In
addition, as a staple vegetable in China, cabbage symbolised a humble
life and was highly regarded for its simplicity and unassuming form.
A related jade ‘cabbage’ vase, Qing dynasty, is illustrated in The
Complete Collection of Treasures from the Palace Museum, vol.8,
Beijing, 2011, p.221, pl.177.
