                                                                  Reposant sur un pied haut légèrement évasé, la panse globulaire est
                                                                  délicatement  ornée  de  quatre  bandes  à  motif  tressé,  le  couvercle
                                                                  surmonté d'une prise archaïsante.

                                                                  The  present  jade  dou  appears to be very rare. The form of these
                                                                  pedestalled ritual bowls with covers was mentioned in the Book
                                                                  of Rites  and is known since the Warring States period in both
                                                                  bronze  and  pottery.  See  another  similarly  decorated  grey  jade  dou,
                                                                  dated early 19th century, bearing an apocryphal Xuande seal mark,
                                                                  illustrated in The Crawford Bequest: Chinese Objects in the Collection
                                                                  of the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, pl. 28.

         RARE COUPE EN JADE VERT EPINARD
         CHINE, DYNASTIE QING, EPOQUE QIANLONG (1736-1795)
         Reposant sur un pied formé par des pétales stylisés, elle est fnement
         sculptée imitant une feur de chrysanthème épanouie. La base est
         délicatement agrémentée de feuillages et pétales stylisés entourant
         une étoile à cinq branches.

         PROVENANCE:
         Previously purchased by Mr Paul M. Segal, a lawyer in Washington
         D.C. between 1948 and 1950, and passed on to his wife Rena G. Segal
         in 1968 when he passed away, thence by desent to previous owner in
         1991.
         Previously from an important private English collection.

         Compare with a similarly shaped spinach-green jade dish in the
         Beijing Palace Museum collection illustrated in Zhongguo  Meishu
         Quanji, Jade, vol. 9, Beijing wenwu chubanshe, 1986, p. 176, no. 305.
