The present washer epitomises the timeless minimalistic
aesthetic embraced by the scholar elite during the Southern
Song dynasty. The luminous glacial blue hue harmonises
beautifully with the layered crackles in the glaze, evoking
the serene and crisp appearance of ice on a bright winter’s
day. Its graceful silhouette and unctuous glaze texture
further enhance its appeal, making it a true embodiment of
perfection; it would have brought great delight to the literati
fortunate enough to have it gracing their table. See a related
bowl of comparable quality exhibited at The Collection of Dr.
and Mrs. Marvin L. Gordon, Chinese Ceramics and Works of
Art, J.J. Lally & Co., New York, 2009, cat. no. 24.
