A RARE LARGE BLUE AND WHITE ‘PHOENIX TAIL’
VASE
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)
The baluster body and tall trumpet-shaped neck are
decorated with continuous riverside landscape scenes
depicting fgures at leisurely pursuits amidst tall trees and
mountains.

It is unusual to fnd a large Kangxi blue and white ‘phoenix
tail’ vase of this type decorated with landscape designs, with
the additional band of insects amidst rocks and blossoming
plants around the base. For other large Kangxi ‘phoenix tail’
vases with landscape designs, but lacking the additional
decorative band around the base, see The Complete Collection

no. 29; A. du Boulay, Christie’s Pictorial History of Chinese

the Estate of Moira Rossi di Montelera and Benefciaries, sold
at Christie’s New York, 19 September 2006, lot 284, which
bore a cyclical date corresponding to 1713.
