PADMAPANI A GILT-BRONZE HEAD OF BUDDHA
Shrivijaya, Indonesia, 9th Century Ayuttahaya Style, Thailand, Circa 16th
Century
seated in lalitasana in the posture of royal
ease, on a double lotus base with right hand in the oval shaped serene face with arched
varadamudra and left arm gracefully extending eyebrows in relief with heavy-lidded downcast
behind supporting the deity’s upper body, draped eyes recessed for inlay, an elongated nose
in a dhoti with a sash wrapped around his legs, mirrored by the pendulous ears framing the face,
wearing pendent earrings, floral shaped arm the delicately hemmed lips, the hair arranged in
bands, bracelets, necklace and decorative hair rows of spiral curls topped rising to form a domed
band, with three strands of matted hair running ushnisha pierced for insertion of a separately-cast
down his back, the face with serene expression finial
