signed Wu Hufan, dated wuzi (1948), the second
lunar month, inscribed “after the painting method
of Yan Wengui”, with one seal of the artist, wu hu
fan
98.7 by 32.7 cm. 38⅞ by 12⅞ in.
Lilian Holmes Jenness (1889-1965) was born
in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When she was a
young woman she moved to China to serve as
a Presbyterian missionary, and she spent much
of her time in Shanghai. Lilian was close to the
family of Pang Yipeng (1901-1998), who was a
successful artist and illustrator in Shanghai.
Lilian adopted one of Pang’s sons when she had
to leave China in 1949. This Wu Hufan scroll was
very likely gifted to Lilian at the time, and it has
remained in the family since then.

仿燕文貴畫法，吳湖帆。鈐印：吳湖帆
注：莉莉安 • 傑尼斯（1889-1965）生於
馬薩諸塞州劍橋鎮，她年輕時就作為長老
會傳教士一員來到中國，大部分時間駐上
海，後與當時海上著名廣告設計師龐亦鵬
（1901-1998）相友善。莉莉安於1949年離
開中國之際領養了龐亦鵬的一個兒子，想
必此件吳湖帆作品亦是當年受贈之物。這
件作品其後一直保存在莉莉安家人處。
