By Hozan, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Possibly intended to represent the legend Tsuru no Ongaeshi (Crane’s
Return of a Favour), depicting a hunter standing with one foot resting
on a rock, holding his rifle and, releasing the crane which shows its
gratitude by rubbing its wing on the man’s head; signed on the base in
a green-lacquer reserve Hozan.
