              HAKUIN EKAKU (1685-1768)
              Edo period (1615-1868), mid-18th century
              Kakejiku (vertical hanging scroll), ink on paper
              in silk mounts, depicting a happy-looking
              Daikoku (God of Prosperity) riding on a
              minogame (hairy-tailed turtle symbolizing
              longevity), carrying a sack of treasure over
              his shoulder, and holding a mallet in his right
              hand, beneath an inscription reading Mata
              bandai no ike no kame wa ko ni Daikoku o
              okonaitari (The turtle that dwells in the pond
              of eternity carries Daikoku on its back again),
              sealed at top Rinzai seishu (The authentic
              Rinzai tradition) and with two smaller seals
              at right; with an inscribed wood storage box.
              Overall 147cm x 39.4cm (57 7/8in x 15½in),
