    B enoît Boland (1885-1983) came from a family

    of adventurers. His sister was the famous aviator
    Adrienne Bolland, the frst woman to have crossed
    the Andes Mountains by plane in 1921. He started
    his career as a seaman on the “Pourquoi Pas?” with
    Jean-Baptiste Charcot in his second expedition in
    Antarctic (1908-1910). He fnished his career in 1946
    in China where he was managing the Shanghai Port.
    During the 23 years he spent in China he became
    immersed in Chinese life and culture, he spoke
    perfectly Chinese.

    Il est représenté assis en vajrasana, ses mains en
    dhyanamudra. Son visage est serein. Il est vêtu de
    robes monastiques à la bordure fnement incisée
    de rinceaux de feurs. Son torse nu est incisé d’une
    svastika.

    PROVENANCE

    Collection of Benoît Boland (1885-1983), a French
    naval captain who worked in China from 1923 to
    1946, and thence by descent in the family.
