Huang Binhong was a highly accomplished artist,
collector, connoisseur, and educator who combined
deep knowledge and understanding of China’s
artistic past with a determination to modernize the
Chinese painting tradition.  Drawing from ancient
aesthetic values, Huang Binhong focused on the
relationship between painting and calligraphy,
emphasized the necessity of capturing the spirit of
his painting subjects, and was deeply interested in
the expressive qualities of ink.  This painting depicts
the Nanping mountains near Hangzhou after rain
and drew, in part, on Huang’s frequent travels.  It was
created in 1952, when the artist was 89 years old,
still robust in energy but sufering increasingly from
cataracts.  Living and teaching in Hangzhou at the
time, Huang’s paintings show a new experimental
phase.  As we see in this landscape of the Nanping
mountains, as well as his Dry Brush Landscape 渴笔
山水图 in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum from the
same year, Huang Binhong explored the efects of
building up his painting with numerous layers, so that
the composition consists of many closely rendered
mountain forms that are created with many small
strokes of wet ink.   The result is a unique style of
dense imagery that both depicts a dynamic landscape
and explores the rich visual impact of ink.

黃賓虹是一位成就集於一身的藝術家,收藏家,鑑
賞家與教育家。對中國傳統文化歷史擁有深厚底蘊
的他,通過對中國傳統文化傳承、蛻變以及發展動
態的力行實踐,致力於推動中國繪畫傳統的現代化
進程。黃賓虹從中國古代美學中汲取營養,關注畫
與書法的聯繫,強調捕捉繪畫主體的神韻和探索墨
彩的表現性。此幅作品基於畫者多次造訪南屏山的
經歷,描繪了杭州附近南屏山的雨後景象。作品作
於1952年,屆時黃賓虹已是八十九歲高壽,身體
雖然安康卻受目疾煩擾。此時正值他在杭州教書時
期,也是他繪畫創作實驗的一新階段。正如此幅南
屏山山景,以及他於同年創作、現藏於浙江美術館
的《渴筆山水圖》所呈現,黃賓虹使用濕筆層層點
染繪出清晰的山體輪廓,通過構建出豐富的層次來
探索畫面的表現性。畫面渾厚華滋,既體現了豐富
的山景又承載了墨彩的無窮韻味。
